Protecting The Tongue.

Al Salamu 'Alaykum.

The following are some ahadith from Hadratji Yusuf's(rahimahullah) 'Muntakhab Ahadith'. The English translation by F.U.Farooqui is of rather poor quality, so I have corrected the translation wherever necessary. The riwayat are taken from the section on Da'wah, chapter on avoiding useless talk.

1. Mughira ibn Shu'ba(ra) narrates that he heard the Messenger(saws) say: Allah hates three things for you; idle talk(Qeel wa Qaal), wastage of wealth(ida'tal maal) and excessive questioning(kathrathus suwaal). (Bukhari)

2. Mu'awiya ibn Heeda(ra) narrates that he heard the Messenger(saws) say: Woe unto him who speaks to make the people laugh and lies. Woe unto him, woe.
(Tirmidhi)

3. Hafs ibn 'Asim(ra) narrated that the Messenger(saws) said: It is enough for a man to be counted as a liar if he narrates all that he hears.
(Muslim)

4. 'Imran ibn Hattaan(rah) narrates that I met Aba Dhar(ra), (he was) in the mosque, wrapped in a black garment. I asked, "O Abu Dhar! Why this loneliness?" He answered, "I heard the Messenger of Allah (saws) say: "Loneliness is better than a bad friend and a good friend is better than loneliness and to teach good things is better than silence and silence is better than teaching evil."
(Bayhaqi).

Wa'laykum Salam.
